Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has announced that face coverings will be compulsory on public transport in England from June 15. The Transport Secretary said that face covering will now be compulsory on all public buses, trains, buses and trams, as well as trains and buses in London. It has been announced that face masks will be compulsory for the first time in the UK, with the introduction of a compulsory face mask for all passengers. Transport Secretary Grant Shappes has announced that public bus, train and tram journeys will no longer require "face covering." Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced that from Monday, a face mask will be compulsory for anyone using public transport or travelling on a plane. The government's decision to impose a mandatory face mask requirement on all passengers on public buses, trains, buses and trams will come into force on Monday, Taoiseach Micheal Martin said. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTA) said over the weekend that face masks will be mandatory for travelers on public transportation. Rail and bus drivers are expected to enforce the measure, while face coverings associated with the move "will be mandatory for all passengers on all public buses, trains, buses and trams in all parts of the country from Monday." The face covering, which will be "compulsory" for public transport in combination with a face mask and other face protection equipment, was declared by the National Transport Authority (NDA) at the weekend. In Scotland, people have also been advised to wear a face mask on public transport and in enclosed public spaces. Binding rules on public transport and shops will also apply to staff, although many choose to wear face veils where social isolation is not possible. As the mask reduces the risk of infection and the risk of unintentional transmission of the virus to others, it could make it more difficult to wear a mask while a coronavirus is present in the Community. To minimize the risk of unintentional transmission of the virus to each other and without symptoms, the masks must be worn on public transport, according to the NDA. [Sources: 8, 9, 17]

Shapps said: "The benefits are obvious, particularly on public transport, where social isolation is difficult. Britain is the first country in the world to require the widespread use of face masks, and from a public health perspective this is to be welcomed. We would not want to allow more people to travel on public transport and force them to wear a face mask. When you travel by public transport, when it gets crowded, social distance is very difficult, as is the distance by car, bus, train, taxi or other means of transport. [Sources: 3, 4]
